The Seventy Year Train Ride In-Person
What’s it like to ride in the cab of an Acela train, going 150 miles an hour? How about driving a steam engine powered by sugar cane? Dr. Frank Heppner, author of Railroads of Rhode Island, will answer this, and many other train questions, as he gives a slide presentation based on his latest book, The Seventy Year Train Ride; 500,000 Miles by Rail.
Dr. Heppner is an Emeritus Professor of Biological Sciences at URI, where he taught 25,000 freshmen in his introductory biology classes during his 41 year career. Dr. Heppner has been riding trains since before he was born. His father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in California. By the time he was 10, he’d accumulated about 10,000 miles aboard trains, and he subsequently rode trains in 28 countries, including Morocco and Malaysia. The Seventy Year Train Ride; 500,000 Miles by Rail is a lighthearted memoir that recounts his global adventures (and misadventures) aboard trains around the world.
